India’s logistics industry is grappling with a severe labor shortage despite recent hiring increases, as experts urge faster action to close the widening skills gap. The Logistics Sector Skill Council (LSSC) has stressed that existing training programs fall short of addressing the deficit, calling instead for expanded digital workforce programs and industry-specific certifications to prepare workers for modern demands.

Discussions around these challenges intensified at LogiMAT India 2026, the world’s largest logistics expo, which opened in Mumbai with participation from 350 international companies across 10 nations. The event’s emphasis on workforce development mirrors growing worries about India’s ability to sustain economic growth without resolving its skills crisis. Bernhard Müller, Vice President of Landesmesse Stuttgart, observed that the fair has evolved into a critical hub for aligning policy, technology, and industry needs, further solidifying India’s position as a major logistics powerhouse.

Gender diversity remains a key issue in the sector. Shyam Jagannathan, Director General of Shipping for the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, pointed to Sagar Pe Samman, an award recognizing women’s contributions to logistics. He argued that broader female involvement, especially in seafaring, where India is among the top three global suppliers of crew, is essential for long-term industry expansion. Event organizers have partnered with groups like the Warehousing Association of India and the Indo-French Chamber of Commerce to promote inclusion through targeted initiatives.

The collaboration between LogiMAT India and the LSSC is focused on actionable solutions, including practical training modules and research papers on cutting-edge logistics technologies. Exhibitors such as Armstrong Dematic and Jungheinrich India will display advancements in warehouse automation and infrastructure, while dedicated zones will address sustainability and supply chain efficiency. The event’s growing global engagement highlights India’s goal of becoming a leading center for logistics talent worldwide.
